Fan Clutch
ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM AUTO PARTS: THERMAL FAN CLUTCH
HOW TO DETECT THE %SYNONYM1% FAILURE
To check if the fan coupling is working correctly, you have to rotate the fan by hand when the engine is shut down. It must make only several turns by inertia. If the fan stops right after you release it, or continues rotating for a long time, the fan clutch is defective.
Then start the engine, but not more than for a minute. With a properly functioning coupling, you can easily stop the moving fan with a rolled newspaper. Shut down the engine and try to rotate the fan again. The number of turns made by inertia should increase.
Warm up the engine. If you still can stop the fan with a rolled newspaper, the fan clutch has failed.
The dismantled part can be checked as follows. The component should be heated, for instance, with a heat gun or by putting it in a hot water. The heated coupling should not freely rotate. Otherwise, you have to repair or replace it.
