AC Expansion Valve
AIR CONDITIONING AUTO PARTS: EXPANSION VALVE AIR CONDITIONING
Expansion valve, which is also referred to as a throttle valve, is part of an air conditioner including the car. While the liquid flows through the narrowed part of the expansion valve, the pressure decreases, causing an increase in volume. This reduction of pressure takes place without mechanical power and also improves heat dissipation without the change of state, in which the heat content (enthalpy) remains the same. The causal increase in volume takes place either because of the gas expansion or liquid evaporation.
Typically, this working liquid flows as a nearly boiling liquid into the expansion valve, just to change its volume. During this process a part of the liquid evaporates, the other part remains liquid. Then, the liquid part gets into the evaporator where it absorbs heat from the environment. Thus, the air conditioner cools the interior of the vehicle. With the regular use of the conditioner expansion valve is constantly exposed to stress and it also wears out.
Air conditioner operating period is at least two years but some components may outwear and must be replaced. In addition to the expansion valve, also compressor, evaporator and condenser can fail. HOW TO DETECT MALFUNCTION OF THE EXPANSION VALVE AIR CONDITIONING VALVE
To detect a failure, check whether the pressure has changed. Use the devices intended for servicing the air conditioning system. First, connect the air conditioning service station to the fittings, then remove the glove box and connect pressure gauges. Next, connect one thermometer near the intake air duct, and another one - on the central grid. Then lift the hood, open the front doors, start the air conditioner in forced mode, and set the electric motor shaft rotation speed at 1,500 rpm. Let the system work for 10 minutes with these parameters, and take the readings of the pressure and the temperature. If the pressure readings deviate significantly from the norm, the component is faulty. Then inspect the expansion valve, which will let you determine whether the valve is ice-covered, or dirty.
